I visited the incredibly city of Pompei and I was blown away. I didn’t know anything about the history before I went, which left me feeling very ignorant after I had spent a few hours there.
For those of you that don’t know about the City, here’s a link where you can read more: http://www.history.com/topics/ancient-history/pompeii
But, to summarise, the whole city was completely buried in lava when Mount Vesuvius erupted all those years ago. 2000 people lost their lives. As it stands now, the city has been recovered to it’s original buildings. Incredible pottery can be found on display and you can walk around and see how the city would have been all those years ago.
I was really moved when we came across real bodies of adults, children and animals that are on display. They are in the position that they died in and it’s horrifying. You can’t begin to even imagine what it was like for them.
The beauty and history of the place shone through and it was a truly fascinating day.
If you are vising this area of Italy I would absolutely recommend that you take a visit.
I wouldn’t say it’s necessary to get a tour guide if you enjoy exploring. I prefer walking around and stumbling across amazing things. But, if you want to know everything in detail then they are extremely informative.
